Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes—From Cleopatra to Camus

Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes—From Cleopatra to Camus
Author(s): Kelly Murphy, Hallie Fryd

This book compiles photos and life stories of 50 of the sexiest men and women from history and asks the essential question: Would you really want to date them? Some are artists, some are scientists, and many are political or military leaders, but all have had a lasting impact on human life—and a sizable impact on their admirers as well. Each entry describes the period in which the heartthrob lived and includes essential stats, hilarious sidebars, and, of course, a “crushability” ranking: a measurement of how crush-worthy these people really are, based on their relative levels of heroism (or villainy).

Published January 7th 2014.

Get the skinny on 50 of history’s hottest heartthrobs and rekindle your romantic imagination with the new book, Historical Heartthrobs: 50 Timeless Crushes-- From Cleopatra to CamusDelve into the details of the romantic lives (as well as the key contributions to history) of this attractive collection of charismatic men and women from the ages. From the smoldering Pablo Picasso and the electric Nikola Tesla to the chic Coco Chanel, this book and blog tour will inspire you to make a date with history—just in time for Valentine’s Day!

As a History student, I've always had a love-hate relationship with the subject I'm studying. There are moments when the reason why I study History to elude me, such as when I'm typing a lengthy response to one of those Structured Essay or Source-Based Questions. And then, there are moments like this which make me remember why I like History so so much.

Reading this book was a superb experience in itself-- for the first time, I was looking at historical personalities through the lenses of modern-day idolatry. They were portrayed in glamorous pictures, given a simple breakdown of their love life, areas of influence, their best features and also a heat factor. It was almost like The Bachelor starring famous and infamous men and women in history, the ones who might have ruled a nation, inspired a war or created a long-lasting legacy-- both scandalous and otherwise.

One of my favorites was Sylvia Plath, of whom I knew close to nought. I've enjoyed her poetry, though sometimes they were too morbid for my taste, but other times, I've tended to avoid her as much as I can.  But the few pages on her life in this novel were brilliant and captivating to the maximum-- her heartbreaking and unstable marriage to Ted Hughes that was described as "star-crossed" by contemporary author, Erica Jong; her initial failure in writing; her notorious poetry collection, Ariel, after her breakup with Hughes; her eventual depression and suicide. With wittiness and flair, this non-fiction novel showcased Plath's life and transfixed me using chapter dividers like "Best Features", "Why She Matters" and "In Her Own Words", convincing me of her dark seduction and the visceral power of her words.

Wonderfully written, this book is a must for any history lover or anyone who has ever eagerly Googled the young pictures of certain historical figures for pure fun (honestly, you should be a history junkie if that was the case). Historical Heartthrobs will inform, educate, entertain and maybe, even make a history fan out of you.

All I can say is 'thank-you' to the two genius writers who thought up of a concept like this book and made it happen-- history has never seemed more fun.

Fairest Of Them All
Author: Carolyn Turgeon
288 pages
Publisher: Touchstone
What if Rapunzel was Snow White’s evil stepmother? From the author of Godmother and MermaidThe Fairest of Them All explores what happens when fairy tale heroines grow up and don’t live happily ever after.

Living in an enchanted forest, Rapunzel spends her days tending a mystical garden with her adoptive mother, Mathena. A witch, Mathena was banished from court because of her magic powers, though the women from the kingdom still seek her advice and herbal remedies. She waits, biding her time to exact revenge against those who betrayed her.

One day Rapunzel’s beautiful voice and long golden locks captivate a young prince hunting in the forest nearby. Overcome, he climbs her hair up to her chamber and they fall into each other’s arms. But their afternoon of passion is fleeting, and the prince must return to his kingdom, as he is betrothed to another.

Now king, he marries his intended to bring peace to his kingdom. They have a stunning daughter named Snow White. Yet the king is haunted by his memories of Rapunzel, and after the mysterious death of his wife, realizes he is free to marry the woman he never stopped longing for. In hopes of also replacing the mother of his beloved daughter, the king makes Rapunzel his queen.

But when Mathena’s wedding gift of an ancient mirror begins speaking to her, Rapunzel falls under its evil spell, and the king begins to realize that Rapunzel is not the beautiful, kind woman he dreamed of.

Published on 6th August 2013.

A unique spin on the original tales of Rapunzel and Snow White, Fairest of Them All breathes life into two otherwise old school stories that are so well-known that we can hardly expect to be surprised.

The front part of the story touches on Rapunzel's initial encounter with the Prince and gives a new facet to this iconic fairytale protagonist-- she has magical powers, making her either a witch or euphemistically speaking, a herb healer. Even though we are warned from the very first page that she is going to end up as one of fairytale's most timeless villains-- Snow White's stepmother, the evil queen-- over the first part of the book, we come to care for her. A lot.

Rapunzel begins as a innocent young woman and from the moment she meets the young prince who would later become king, the wheels of fate starts to turn, propelling her onto the path leading to her eventual rise and downfall as an antagonist. We can fully understand her motivations as she begins to value the influence of beauty and is slowly changed by the fickleness of love and the corrupting nature of wealth and power.

However, though several of the main plot-lines in the original Snow White tale do unfold, Rapunzel does not disappoint us faithful readers who are rooting for her, redeeming herself near the end of the book, in a resolution that was wholly unexpected but delightfully satisfying.

This book was one of the most creative retellings that I've read, taking liberties with the crossover storyline but also staying true to the magic and romance that comes with every fairytale. Wonderfully rendered, this book has a protagonist which has much more finesse and character than the original Rapunzel.

Blog Tour: Character Interview with Eleanor & Daniel (A DARKNESS STRANGE & LOVELY)

NOTE: The interview has been added to this post as of 16/07/2013.

Following an all-out battle with the walking Dead, the Spirit Hunters have fled Philadelphia, leaving Eleanor alone to cope with the devastating aftermath. But there’s more trouble ahead—the evil necromancer Marcus has returned, and his diabolical advances have Eleanor escaping to Paris to seek the help of Joseph, Jie, and the infuriatingly handsome Daniel once again. When she arrives, however, she finds a whole new darkness lurking in this City of Light. As harrowing events unfold, Eleanor is forced to make a deadly decision that will mean life or death for everyone.

Let's have a sneak peek into the adventures that Eleanor, Daniel & the Spirit-Hunters will have in Paris in this exclusive interview!

1)  Daniel & Eleanor, after the great showdown with the Undead last time round, what’s the first thing you had thought you would say when you see each other again?

Daniel: Er… “How’s your…wrist?” Wait, no. That’s terrible. Maybe, “You look mighty fine, Empress.” Yeah—that’s a bit better.

Eleanor: A simple “It’s lovely to see you" would suffice.

Daniel: *rolls eyes*

Eleanor: I think I’ll settle on a, “Hello, Mr. Sheridan. Broken any more hearts since we last met?”

2) Since Paris is a world fashion capital, tell us one or two of your favorite French fashion pieces!

Daniel: I can't say that it's French--maybe it is?--but I've grown pretty fond of the monocle as a fashion accessory. Those things are blazin' useful when I'm working with delicate items in the lab.

Eleanor: I mostly just envy the effortless way French women put themselves together. They're always in the latest style, they exude confidence, and it all looks so easy. My new friend Laure perfectly epitomizes that. Also, how the devil she manages to make her waist so tiny, I will never know.

3 ) What are some new tricks that you've learnt in A DARKNESS STRANGE AND LOVELY when combating the Undead?

Eleanor: Well, we have a whole host of new inventions thanks to Mr. Sheridan.

Daniel: *scowl* Mr. Sheridan, Mr. Sheridan. It's "Daniel", dammit. And yeah, I've managed to improve all of our tech from Philadelphia. I even got to spend a few weeks studying in Germany with some brilliant engineers--I've got one big piece of equipment I expect all of Paris will love.

4) What are some of the most memorable places you've visited in Paris?

Eleanor: The Tuileries Gardens and the River Seine--oh heavens, there's nowhere else like them! Just seeing all the gray buildings that hug the stone riverside and how the chestnut trees list in the breeze--it makes my heart soar.

Daniel: She asked memorable, Empress, not your favorite. I'd say the Palais Garnier had some pretty memorable events.

Eleanor: *glare* And not the Richelieu library? Hmph.

5) What’s next for both of you? Tell us a hint of what will be coming in the third book— more romance, battles with the Undead &… Egypt?!

Eleanor: I don't want to spoil our Parisian adventure for readers, but let's simply say that although we do save Paris, we're not even close to ending this battle. The war has really on just begun, and now we're headed for Marseille--possibly even further.

Daniel: But this is what Spirit-Hunters do, and we'll fight this until the very end.

Eleanor: Until the very end.

ABOUT SUSAN

Susan Dennard is a writer, reader, lover of animals, and eater of cookies. She used to be a marine biologist, but now she writes novels. And not novels about fish either, but novels about kick-butt heroines and swoon-worthy rogues (she really likes swoon-worthy rogues).

She lives in the Midwest with her French husband and Irish setter, and her debut, SOMETHING STRANGE AND DEADLY, is now available from HarperTeen.

Well, that's the spirit! Awww, the bickering between these two are simply adorable :) The next time I'm in France, I'll definitely drop by these places mentioned in the book & in this interview. Here's a picture of the Richelieu library to make us book-lovers drool:

A huge thank-you to Eleanor, Daniel (& of course, the ever-amazing Susan Dennard) for making an appearance on Bookcase to Heaven today :)

Author Interview: Ashley Elston (author of The Rules for Disappearing)

Welcome to my stop on THE RULES FOR DISAPPEARING blog tour organized by Shane @ Itching for Books! She has some amazing tours so do check her site out.

Today, I have an interview with Ashley, in which she mentions Etienne St. Clair (awww) and Julia Roberts and gives us some exclusive information about the book.

*

She’s been six different people in six different places: Madeline in Ohio, Isabelle in Missouri, Olivia in Kentucky... But now that she’s been transplanted to rural Louisiana, she has decided that this fake identity will be her last.

Witness Protection has taken nearly everything from her. But for now, they’ve given her a new name, Megan Rose Jones, and a horrible hair color. For the past eight months, Meg has begged her father to answer one question: What on earth did he do – or see – that landed them in this god-awful mess? Meg has just about had it with all the Suits’ rules — and her dad’s silence. If he won’t help, it’s time she got some answers for herself.

But Meg isn’t counting on Ethan Landry, an adorable Louisiana farm boy who’s too smart for his own good. He knows Meg is hiding something big. And it just might get both of them killed. As they embark on a perilous journey to free her family once and for all, Meg discovers that there’s only one rule that really matters — survival.

YOUR BOOK

You are advertising your book on TV, come up with a catchy tagline!
Never tell anyone your secrets.

Describe Meg and Ethan in three words each.
Meg: Strong, loyal, determined
Ethan: Smart, trustworthy, adorable

Which fake identity did Meg had the most fun with? (Maybe something to do with the hair color?)
Without giving too much away – probably her time in Florida. Who wouldn’t want to spend every day at the beach?

If your characters had the chance to talk to you face to face, what would they each say?
I can’t believe you did this to us.

What was your inspiration for this book? And, why write about the Witness Protection Program?
I wanted to tell the story of a girl who had to hide her true identity and how tough that would be. I’ve always been fascinated by the Witness Protection Program and thought it made a great backdrop for a thriller.

What was one unexpected thing that surprised you in the process of writing this novel?
What surprised me the most was how many talented people it takes to get a book out into the world.

YOU

If Hollywood made a movie about your life, whom would you like to see play the lead role as you?
Ummm…I guess Julia Roberts because I love her smile and she always seems so happy.

If someone wrote a biography about you, what do you think the title should be?
Titles are so hard! I guess… Laissez le bon temps rouler
(For any of you wondering, that means "let the good times roll"!)

Tell me about the worst date in your life.
A boy from another high school invited me to his prom. It was on a riverboat and he was the only person I knew. Once the boat left the dock, we were stuck there. It was the longest four hours of my life.

If you could travel back and forth in time, which era or time period would you choose?
Roaring 20s! I would love to be in a flapper dress listening to jazz music in a dance hall.

Kiss. Kill. Marry. (Your choice.)
Kiss: Etienne St. Clair
Kill: King Leck
Marry: Etienne St. Clair (Love him!)

THIS OR THAT

Heels or sneakers? Sneakers

Thrillers or Romantic Comedies? Both – depends on the mood!

Big Bad Wolf or Prince Charming? While the Big Bad Wolf might be exciting, Prince Charming wins for the long haul

Thai food or Chinese food? Yum! I love both but eat more Chinese food since there’s not a Thai restaurant where I live.

Twilight or Harry Potter? Always Harry.
